Strengthening Youth Resilience (SYR)

Strengthening Youth Resilience aims to enhance the health of middle school students and youth in after-school programs by addressing anxiety and depression through intensive, targeted interventions. аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ interns collaborate with local youth from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach and LBUSD, helping them manage feelings of anger, worry, sadness, and irritability. These interns, currently enrolled in accredited programs, are training to become professional service providers. The program’s goal is to foster healthy relationships, strengthen social connections with peers, and improve overall quality of life.

The SYR Program places аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ School of Social Work student interns in Long Beach Unified School District middle schools and Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach after school programs. The program's goal is to produce an evidence-based model to be replicated year after year and serve as a national model with the following objectives:

  • Access children and youth in school and after-school environments
  • Address anxiety and depression in children and youth
  • Train, educate and engage systems impacting children and youth
  • Increase behavioral health workforce by establishing additional social work internship opportunities

The аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ social work interns are paired with professional counselors in the schools, and all interns receive weekly training from аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ-employed supervisors.

From student: "This picture's purpose is to represent what your mental health is built on, the person in the middle representing your will and the spider web/spiders acting as your desires and what's stopping you from a healthy life. The gate represents the step you take for a better future and beyond that exists your happiness. The empty chairs show the people who have supported you and existed in your life. The wall is your culture (I'm Cambodian, that's why the wall looks like that) and the heart and brain show your thoughts and feelings. Finally, the two people standing in the corners represent your parents."
