Dr. Angela Locks has been named the next department chair of the College of Education's Educational Leadership Department and director of the educational leadership doctorate program. College Dean Anna Ortiz announced the appointment in a note to faculty and staff:

I am happy to share that Dr. Angela Locks will be appointed as department chair beginning Aug. 19, 2024, as recommended by the Educational Leadership Department faculty. In this capacity, she will also serve as the educational leadership doctorate program director and the executive director of the Center for Educational Effectiveness and Evaluation. I am grateful that Dr. Locks has agreed to take on these critical roles. Don Haviland will work closely with Angela to ensure a smooth transition.

Dr. Locks began her faculty career at Cal State Long Beach, joining the faculty of the Student Development in Higher Education program in 2008 as an assistant professor. She has progressed through the ranks, achieving tenure and promotion to associate professor in 2014, and promotion to full professor in 2019.

Not only has she made significant impact on SDHE and the EDD program over the years, but she brought many undergraduate research program opportunities to аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ, notably as the inaugural director of the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, the inaugural director of the Office of Undergraduate Research Services, and the PI of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program. She currently serves as the executive director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Academic Affairs, where she has led the campus climate research efforts and is the campus lead and PI for the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center.

Her scholarly work examines college access and college experiences for diverse college students with an emphasis on retention, institutional diversity praxis, and the relationships between college student interactions with diverse others and diversity program engagement. Dr. Locks has received many awards over the years, including Outstanding Faculty Mentor for Student Engagement in Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity and as CED’s Most Valuable Professor.

Dr. Locks’ considerable experience in multiple areas at The Beach and her scholarship focus will be critical in leading the department, but also in serving as a member of the college leadership team. We are fortunate that Dr. Locks has chosen this appointment as her next leadership opportunity and I’m grateful to her and the department that elected her.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Locks.
